How to Connect Two Computers to the Same Monitor

There are many reasons why you may want to connect two computers to one monitor. For example, it could be a matter of saving space. It could be a question of resources, maybe you just need a monitor and do not want to buy another. It may be necessary for a presentation. Whatever the reason, it's usually possible to connect two computers to the same monitor. The connection process involves the use of a relatively inexpensive routing device called VGA switch box. Follow the steps in this OneHowTo article and find out how to connect two computers to the same monitor.

You'll need:
  • VGA distribution box
  • 3 VGA cables
  • 2 hard disks
  • 1 Monitor
  • VGA adapters (optional)
Steps to follow:
1

Check that the computer monitor and both devices support VGA / SVGA video signal. If any of the devices do not support VGA / SVGA video signal, you will need to purchase the appropriate adapter for the device to be compatible with VGA. For example, if you are using a digital computer monitor, connect a VGA digital signal adapter to the DVI port in the computer monitor port.

2

Once you've connected the VGA and the DVI, turn off both computers.

3

Plug one end of a VGA connector cable to the VGA port on the computer monitor. The VGA connector must be aligned so that the 15-pin connector is inserted seamlessly into the 15 pin slots in the VGA port. Turn the screws on the back of the VGA connector clockwise to tighten them and secure the cable in place. Connect the other end of this VGA connector cable to the output VGA (monitor) port in the VGA connections box.

6

Connect the VGA connection box in a wall outlet or power strip.

7

Start both computers. Turn on the computer monitor.

8

Turn on the VGA connection box. Adjust the switch box to position '1' or 'A' to see the signal display of the first computer. Adjust the switch box to position '2' or 'B' to see the signal display of the second computer.
