The truth is that the function to check the spelling of the text in the Google e-mail system is somewhat hidden, so it is not uncommon to not find it at first glance.
Gmail designers decided to include this functionality by the trash icon at the bottom of the message, an icon which lets you delete the email that you were writing, i.e. discard the draft, which is what they call it.
In the picture accompanying this text you can see specifically how to enable the Gmail spell checker. You have to click on the triangle next to the trash can icon and in the window that appears you choose to 'check spelling'.
Then, you will see that as you type some words will appear marked in yellow; these words are those that the Gmail spell checker believes to contain errors. Pressing on the term in question, the system will suggest alternate words that are spelled correctly.
If you do not see the option to correct spelling, it may be because you have activated the basic HTML view of Gmail. To remove this and start the spell checker you must go to the top or bottom of the screen and click on the line that reads standard Gmail view.
