Checking whether your PC can have Windows 10

Windows 10 can be freely downloaded if you have running a desktop, laptop or tablet with the latest version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. If you are not sure which Windows you are using, you can figure it out by visiting the official website of Microsoft. In addition, you should be the administrator of the computer to be upgraded. For example, you cannot upgrade your office computer managed by the IT team.

Creating a backup

However, upgrading your operating system does not interfere with your data, you should create a backup, just to be on the safe side. You never know, something may go wrong during the upgrade, and you may end up losing all important files and documents.

Updating the current operating system

First of all, you will need to have the latest version of the Windows operating system you have on your computer. Your operating system must be already updated if you have set up for automatic updates, but if not, you will have to update it manually.

· If you have a Windows 7 operating system, go to Start > Control Panel > System & Security > Windows Update

· If you have Windows 8 or 8.1 operating system, go to Start > PC Settings > Update & Recovery > Windows Update

No matter which operating system you have, your computer will automatically tell you if there are any updates to be installed, and also walk you through the installation process. There might be several updates that you may have to install before you can proceed to installing Windows 10.

Receiving the Windows prompt

Once you have updated your current operating system, a Windows icon will pop up in your taskbar, telling you to reserve your Windows 10. Read the directions that come on your screen, and let Microsoft know that you want Windows 10 operating system. Once you have reserved it, you will have to wait for Microsoft to send you Windows 10. This may take a few days, after which you will receive a notification telling you that you can now install the latest Windows 10 operating system. Just follow the on-screen instructions, and get your system rebooted with the latest OS.
