How to Reduce Whatsapp Data Usage

Whatsapp had become one of the most important and almost an essential app in everyone’s mobile. Its main attraction is sending and receiving unlimited text and media messages. You can even call your friends through whatsapp or have group chat with your old school or college friends. The only negative point of this app is the fast data consumption. Whenever you connect internet in your device, whatsapp automatically starts downloading all the videos which causes huge data usage. Lower the data consumption

Understanding the plight of Whatsapp users, the developers of Whatsapp have kept a special option to lower data usage. To avail this feature, try the following steps.

  1. Open Whatsapp.
  2. Open Whatsapp Settings.
  3. A new page will open. In it the fourth option you'll find:Data Usage. Tap it.
  4. Again a new page will open. Here look at the last option. It is: Low data usage. Tap on the checkbox beside this option to lower your data consumption.

Change Auto download to Wi–Fi

The main problem of users of whatsapp is that no matter whether they are using internet through cellular data or through Wi-Fi, Whatsapp automatically starts downloading. If you want to change this and download the videos only when connected through Wi-Fi then follow the following steps.

  • For iPhone users:
  1. Open Whatsapp.
  2. Go to Whatsapp settings.
  3. Open the Chats and Calls option.
  4. Tap on Media Auto Download option.
  5. Go to Images, Audio, Video.
  6. Then change it to Wi-Fi.
  • For Android users:
  1. Open Whatsapp.
  2. Go to Whatsapp settings.
  3. Open the Chats and Calls option.
  4. Tap on Media Auto Download option.
  5. Click on the option: When using mobile data.
  6. A dialog box will appear. In it tap on the checkboxes you want to download when you are using mobile data. Then click on OK. The options with unchecked boxes will not be downloaded while you are using mobile data.
  7. Do the same thing with the rest two options.

Turn off Whatsapp Chat Backup when using Mobile data

When you are using mobile data backing up your Whatsapp data in cloud can be a bit expensive. If you want to turn off this feature then use the following steps.

  • For iPhone users:
  1. Open iPhone setting.
  2. Go to iCloud.
  3. Open iCloud Drive.
  4. Tap on the option Use Cellular data.
  5. Turn it to Off.

Unfortunately no such option is available for android users to turn off the backup of Whatsapp Chat.
