How to Tell if Someone Has Accessed my Gmail Account
Today we use email for almost anything: at work, to tell someone that you miss them, to remind your roommate that you need to do the shopping, etc. We store hundreds of emails in our accounts, some of which are very important and others less so, some of which are public and others that are confidential. Regardless of the information you have on your email, you surely wouldn't like to know that someone has been snooping in your email. Here at OneHowTo we explain you how to tell if someone has accessed your Gmail account, in case you think someone has.
There are different ways in which you can check whether your Gmail account has been hacked or not. The first method is to use the "last account activity" feature. This appears in the right bottom part of your inbox, and you'll be able to read the following information there:
- IP address from which you're connecting
- Date of last account activity
- Link to details
Click on details and you'll see more detailed information of the sessions you've started on Gmail.
By clicking on "Details" you will be directed to a page where you can see the details of the last times that your email account was used. Gmail shows you information about the IP, the country, the time and the means through which it has been accessed (mobile, web browser, etc.).
To find out if someone has entered your email, simply compare your IP address with the one that appears in the window.
If you suspect some any of the sessions that appear on the "Details" section has not been started by you, you can click on "Sign out all other sessions" and your Gmail account will automatically be signed out of any other dispositive where it has been started.
You can also use another method to find out if someone is hacking your Gmail account:
Ususally hackers forward all the emails into their accounts. You can check your inbox and check if your email is being forwarded to any other address you don't know.
If you think your Gmail account might be hacked or you suspect someone has been reading your emails, the first thing you should do is immediately change your password. Change also your security question, password recovery email and registered phone number, to make it more difficult to the person trying to enter your account.
We recommend you to use a rather long password which contains numbers, special characters and both upper and lower case letters.
