How to Calculate Running Distance with Google Maps

Google Earth is a tool that is widely used around the world. It is a software similar to a Geographic Information System which allows you to do many things like viewing 3D images of the planet. With this program, you can label places that interest you, view roads and highways, photographs of sights and many other things. If you don't have a GPS and want to know how much distance you covered the other day when you were doing sports, you can find out the information by finding your route on Google Earth and viewing the distance.

Steps to follow:

Open Google Earth installed on your computer. If you do not have it, you can download it from the internet within minutes. Just type "download Google Earth" on Google and you will find a page in the first results.

Once you open Google Earth, you'll find the search bar on the left hand side of the screen. Click on this and enter the name of the place you travelled to/from, for example Barcelona, and the program will take you directly to Barcelona. You can also zoom into Barcelona by double clicking the mouse wheel or using the zoom function to the right of the screen.

Once you've found the place you're looking for, there's an icon shaped like a ruler at the top of the screen called 'Show Ruler'. Click on this icon and select the tab 'Route'.

Now follow the route you took by clicking at various points along your route on the screen. You can also create the route by clicking the left mouse button and without releasing it, follow the route. In order to do this, you need to approve 'mouse navigation' at the bottom of the box.

Once you have recreated the route you followed, you can see the distance you covered in kilometres, metres, inches, miles, etc. and calculate running distance with google maps.

It is very easy to calculate running distance with google maps and plan a route using google earth, and once you use the feature a few times, you will find easy and quick ways to calculate distances and plan routes.

Tips

  • This can help you to find an approximate distance. There will always be errors when using the mouse, as the route will not be recreated as accurately as the route you actually followed.
