Instagram is a great app to share photos, but you may often feel somewhat limited by the requirement that the images are square. In some cases you will not mind, but others know that by cropping the image to fit the format of the app you're missing a lot. Could it be possible to upload to its original rectangular format? Instagram does not allow it, but you can cheat a little. On OneHowTo.com we explain how to stop Instagram cropping photos.

Steps to follow:
1

The trick is simple: get a square image which actually shows a rectangular picture, having filled the edges than enough for the short sides of the picture on Instagram. To do this there are many apps, but one of the best is InstaSize, which is available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Look for it in your app store and download it.

2

Open InstaSize app you just installed. On the first screen you can select the photo you want to upload to Instagram from your smartphone or other albums. If you slide your finger to the left, you will access the camera to take the picture at that time.

3

After selecting or taking the photo, you'll see it in a square frame. You can adjust it with your fingers to move or resize it. The app also lets you create collages and photo editing, adding backgrounds, filters or text.

4

When you have the image as you wish for Instagram click the "Share" button to choose the social network you want to directly display the image. This is already open with the photo ready to share. Now you can continue as if you had entered it onto Instagram.

This is also extremely useful if you don't want Instagram stories to crop your pictures. Take a look at more hacks on our article: how to upload Instagram stories pictures from your gallery.

Other apps include Squaready for iOS and Android and InstaSquarer for Windows phone.

Nowadays, Instagram also allows you to set the shape of photos directly from the app without having to crop them (or at least not very much).

Choose the picture you want to upload from your gallery. Once you have clicked on it, use two fingers to re-size your picture by moving them towards the center of the screen. This will make the picture smaller and adjust. When you are happy with the size, click on the arrow at the top right part of the screen and edit it as you wish!

This option will upload the picture as you wanted it to be, without any white frames or fillings!
